Tomorrow is the anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attack upon the USA. I think all our lives here in America changed. I am affected both in my personal and work lives. Yet my values and beliefs are the same. It is a memory that will remind us that only the justice in the world is what I and you and others make. It reminds us of the human heart and spirit both good and evil. It gives us all the emotions.
The lives lost--is these lives were innocent civilian lives, people going about their daily work or flying on routine flights. The United States was not the only country to loose people. Many other countries lost many of their people in this disaster.
From its rising perhaps it gives us the greatest gift, love.

I remember where I was at when I heard about this, and ended up watching some of it on t.v. I was at work, at an elementary school, and happened to walk into the library to check on something the teacher I worked with needed. I saw what was going on and just couldn't believe it. I went back to the classroom to whisper to the teacher about what had just happened. Since we were working with young kids, we kept it very low key for them, however, all the staff were obviously affected. Then, a year later, I meet the person who ends up becoming my boss 5 yrs later, and is my best friend. He was supposed to be at the North Tower that day on assignment. They changed his assignment to Washington D.C. for that day, and he heard the impact and saw the smoke from when the Pentagon was hit. He, thankfully, was downtown in D.C. He actually sent an email about a year ago to the person who had changed his assignment thanking her for doing so. She didn't really remember him, but he remembers her.
It's a day that my son first new real fear. He was in high school, and the high school choir, which he was a part of, was gearing up for their trip to NYC to perform at Carnegie Hall. When he came home from school that day, after watching all the news all day long at school, he told me that he didn't want to go. He had worked hard all summer to start earning money for the trip and had been so excited about it, then this happened and it really shook his world. I told him that I understood the fear he felt, but give it a week, and talk to me about it again. Then I reminded him that he was going to be taking a chartered bus to NYC, not just a regular bus that anyone rides on. And I also told him to think about what he would miss if he let fear keep him from this once in a lifetime opportunity. A week later, he came to me and said that he still wanted to go. And he was certainly glad he did. That was in June 2002, that my son got to go to NYC. While they were there, they did go to Ground Zero, they saw the memorials all around, and they sang "America, the Beautiful". They ended up with a crowd of people joining them, and the kids in the choir ended up so overcome with emotion, that most of them couldn't finish the song. It's an experience my son will never forget.
It's changed us all. I know that I will never forget where I was, or how I found out. I won't forget the conversation with my son. And all this happened just months after my son's father and I separated. I do believe that my son, and maybe my daughter, felt that their whole world was falling apart because of all that was going on.
We are stronger now, at least my kids and I. But we will never forget the closeness we felt that day, once we got home from school and work. We talked, we watched the news, we were close for a while.
