Canon's latest DSLRs

It has been a while since Canon announces something that excited me. Well, at least not after Canon EOS 5D. Other manufacturers have caught up with Canon's superior image quality, noticeably Pentax, came from the dead, and even as a proud owner of several Canon cameras, I couldn't resist the new K10D. Nikon has also improved themselves over the last couple of years.
A few months back, Canon announced the new Canon EOS 1D MK III that stunned the world with its first 10fps high speed machine and a much more compact and lighter body that was on top of every sport journalist's list.
Canon's pro-sumer DSLR, namely EOS 30D has been lagging behind others since the beginning of last year, even it's entry level EOS 400D does a lightly better job in jpeg images with its superior Digi III processor. It's sadly, a digital age now, a camera body can easily go out of date after a couple of year after technological advances. It could be a class leader for once and then back to bottom after a two years. This has been the case with EOS 30D.
Now, Canon finally answers back with the announcement of EOS 40D, a much improved camera in virtually every respect. Together with the announcement is the latest 1 series - EOS 1Ds MK III monster, which feature a huge 21M pixels CMOS and dual digi III processors!!!!
Is Canon fighting back? Well, I guess, they have to do something to gain their market share back after they lose it to Nikon in Japan this year.
Am I excited about this announcement? Yes and no, Nikon also announcement their forthcoming new DSLRs to counter attack Canon's new weapons - D300 and D3. As a Canon user, I still think Canon could have done better to make all their camera weatherproof.
Great Canon but watch the corners and keep checking the back mirror before everyone catches up!

Hey Gyom, long time no talk!
Latest 40D should be a great camera, hope you haven't confused it with 400D. it's great as it has all the latest stuff thrown into its compact yet rigid magnesium body. It has some degree of weatherproofness so it should be great for outdoor too.
50mm 1.4! Great lens!! abosulte cracker for portrait lens! Excellent choice mate!

It's about £850 in UK and around EUR1000 I guess... but price should fall after a couple of months, so if you can wait, wait for it :D It's a much better camera than 30D and 400D, better build because it's magnesium body!

Yeah, the 50mm 1.4 is great! I have the older 50mm 1.8 (Mk I) not the current plastic one.. and it's good too.
I have the 100mm Macro lens too and it is good for portrait purposes and of course macro shots. 135mm is good but I think the 100mm is more versatile.
Now I have prime lenses of 35mm, 50mm and 100mm, which covers virtually everything I need plus my zoom from 15mm to 500mm so it's sufficient. I do, however, fancy 85mm 1.8 as I want a dedicated portrait lens and the 100mm is too close in many cases.
135mm is very close so beware... especially with a 1.6x factor in APS-C CMOS like 350D, 400D, 30D and 40D, it's like 216mm!!! That may be too much :D

i got my baby, the 40 D.
i bought it two weeks ago, it s so great! there is really a big difference with the 350D (that is still a good camera!)!
i use my 50mm a lot^^ i love it so much!
i retracted about the 135 mm, i will first buy a ultra wide angle lens EF 20mm f2.8 usm (equiv 35mm)!
after a will get the 100 mm macro!!
i need a zoom lens too!! what will you propose??
ayway, i really more and more anjoy photography! hope to learn more about composition!
thanks mate for all your advise and proposition!!
cheers

Wow, congratulation Gyom!!!
Glad to hear that you like the 40D. It's a big step from 350D and you will find many pro-features. It's also better built too, magnesium body!!! lovely :D
zoom, umm.. I love my 24-70mm 2.8 but you can also consider the 17-55mm 2.8 (more tailored to your CMOS size.)
Hope to see more photos!!
Cheers

i retract again!!
for my lens i will get (UWA) tokina 12-24 F4 atx pro dx. it s only F4 but i don t think i will need a big apperture with a wide angle. will be my next investment!
but i am still wondering about zoom lense. canon 24-70 F 2.8 or 24-105 f4. maybe the first one but it looks very expensive to me! but F4 for the other looks a bit short!
i hav time to think about and save money!!
nayway^
hope everything s fine for you!
take care

I am ok, only I caught a cold last weekend and had been resting... So busy that I didn't have time to do any shooting lately, nor updating my blogs here...
Tokina is good, I like them actually. F4 is more than enough for most people unless you are shooting in low light. 24-70 2.8 is good but again, unless you need the speed, F4 is ok, plus 24-105 has IS which is handy and it's lighter than the 2.8. My bag can weight upto 10kg everytime I travel... so, it's better when it's lighter :P

Is posible to make a "TUNING" ? Change DIGIC-II procesor of the EOS 400D with one DIGIC-III procesor ?

Wow... what a question. I doubt it very much you can do that. It's not like a computer mother-board and I guess the circuit board needs to change for DIGI III processor.

Of course it's exciting Kriz!!! Nikon is moving to Full Frame too and which means Canon now have a real competitor. I understand that Canon tries to slow down the launch of new DSLR so they can compete technologically and have breakthroughs.
But the trend isn't like that, a new model comes every 2 years on average now oppose to 5 to 6 years in film equivalents. Now it's about dynamic range, sensitivity, resolution and digital rendition... not so much about metering and speed anymore...

I used one 400D. It's a verry good camera and easy to use. I like the image capture with that.
