Benazir Bhutto Assasinated

To some, she was a lifelong role model. Others call Pakistan's former prime minister and the first female prime minister of any Muslim nation a source of inspiration to women everywhere. One I-Reporter acknowledges, "I never was a political supporter of Benazir Bhutto but now after her death I feel that her loss is a loss for Pakistan, not just her political supporters."
Ms Bhutto - the first woman PM in an Islamic state - was leaving an election rally in Rawalpindi when a gunman shot her in the neck and set off a bomb.
Benazir Bhutto, the leader of Pakistan's opposition, has died from injuries she suffered in a bombing and gun attack that targeted a political rally in Rawalpindi, according to published reports.
Information was continuing to change rapidly, but the Associated Press said Thursday that Bhutto had died after being hurt in the attack. Bloomberg quoted Bhutto aide Imran Hayat as saying she had died at Rawalpindi General Hospital.
The bomber was reported to have fired shots before setting off explosives, and it wasn't yet clear if Bhutto was killed by the gunfire or the blast.
Bhutto, 54, was originally reported to have left the rally before the attack. However, subsequent reports quoted her husband and a security officer as saying she was wounded.
Reports indicated that between 14 and 20 other people were killed. The rally was said to have attracted thousands of Bhutto supporters.
Bhutto, the former prime minister of Pakistan, returned to the nation earlier this year after living in exile for eight years. In October, her motorcade was targeted in an attack that killed more than 100 people.

At a human level this is a tragedy like no other. the single most tragic person in all of Pakistan - maybe all the world - is Nusrat Bhutto. Benazir’s mother. Think about it. Her husband, killed. One son poisoned. Another son assasinated. One daughter dead possibly of drug overdose. Another daughter rises to be Prime Minister twice, but jailed, exiled, and finally gunned down.

* Bhutto goes to address an election rally in Liaqat Ali Bagh

* Finishes her address and gets into her car at 5.30 P.M.

* Two men with AK 47 fire bullets. She is injured in the head and chest.

* Simultaneously, there is a suicide attack near her car.

* No one goes near her car for 10 minutes fearing another explosion.

* She is rushed to hospital.

* Doctors take her to operation theatre.

* Declared dead at 6.16 P.M about 40 minutes after the attack.

Today, in shock, I can think only of Benazir Bhutto the human being. Tomorrow, maybe, I will think of politics.
