Is it good to be a perfectionist...? Or am I living in a fool's paradise?

This is what the dilemma is! If we are not perfect then we are bound to be imperfect. Then why do they say ...humans are the perfect creation of God?
I think we are all near-perfection ....someone may be nearer than the others. Life is a catch-22 situation. LO!

I am a perfectionist....and most of my acquaintances vouch for this fact. I abhor imperfection/shoddiness and anything/everything I do is done with a certain amount of precision..
Of course, I don't expect everyone to follow my footsteps and I don't judge them according to their level of perfection....

You're right ...but your expectations rise from the people around you when you are expecting from them nothing but the perfection. Everybody is not a perfectionist and they are happy their way.
I am a perfectionist and I have to make a dozen compromises everyday ...

But it is a way of life for me...I can't help being this way..
Most times I try to correct others but give up eventually when they just don't like to be perfect...
Compromises..Compromises...is what we have to make in this imperfect world !!

That's the problem ...in fact. People like us make compromises ...and compromises and contend with the nicest of work that somebody did for us. We suffer and make others suffer because of us... : (

I observe I have been spending around 15 minutes everyday before the mirror -trying to get the closest shave ever.... despite knowing the fact that it will be again jumbled up by end of the day...ready for taking away another 20 minutes of my life! And mind you ...nobody notices how much time I lost on it today...!

Management science has discovered a alternative word for it.......excellence (if you've read the famous bestseller in 1983 by Waterman/Peters called "In Search of Excellence"); the basic point they are making is that in a complex world of business ( or, for that matter, life) perfectionism is well-nigh impossible, so you must strive for excellence, which is tending towards perfectionism, but not quite there..........
In short, we may have a larger goal of perfectionism, which we know cannot be achieved, hence in the short run, we must practice Excellence.........

Great Sid! You read my mind....! In fact I had this point in mind when I decided to take this thread further on. We can not be perfect as we are humans .... If we could... we would have become God!
That's why my question was 'Are we living in a fool's paradise?' I believe that the so called perfectionists (like I, Lata, and several others) make lot of compromises everyday (sic) ...and become unhappy (dissatisfied is a suitable word).
My fight against my own self is in shedding this bad habbit .... the fight has sustained for the past 13 years when I first read 'In Search of Excellence' and made it my organization's tagline. It has improved while dealing with people, but I still spend 15-20 minutes trimming my beard! *SMILES*

Yes, and the other lesson to be drawn from 'In Search of..........' is that you need SUSTAINABLE excellence, because I ve read somewhere, that just two of those 43 companies are still in the reckoning, and can qualify as 'Excellent' in today's world............the rest have all gone down-under !!
Now that's the hard part -- how do u sustain excellence??
Is sustained excellence = perfectionism??
Therefore, it cannot be attained.........lol

I learnt it a hard way that you should continue to stride in your chosen direction ....no matter what others talk about you...LOL!

There is danger in staying one course. The world is ever changing, demanding that we be adaptable. Sustainability means that we adapt to the changing world around us.

We have continually changed and that's why have come this far. And why we alone ...everything is changing (except for change itself ...ha...haa!). Sid is right when he says we need to make a continuous march towards perfection ...just enough to keep going. That's for sure that we will never reach perfection ...but striving towards it itself means we are achieving the true meaning of life.

Yet when an individual or group stays on one course, failure is inevitable. The goals must be adjusted regularly to reflect the changing environment.

I understand. And that's why I feel change is inevitable. If things don't change we will suffocate. I recall we were the happiest persons on this planet when our daughter was only 2 years. We would wish that she didn't grow so fast and we could see her this big for a little longer...! She didn't stay that young and is 12 years now like a normal child. We still feel happy seeing her. At the same time our neighbors had a son who stopped growing (physically) after 2 feet half ...and we feel pity for them all.

Yes, that is correct....I seem to remember that IBM was one of the two companies to make the grade; just look at how they have done it -- have you read Lou Gerstner's book "Who says Elephants can't Dance?"??
IBM today are more an IT Services/Consuting company than a computer manufacturing firm...........

Well ...so is Wipro (look at the man who chose to extract oil from seeds not too long back and is among the top three richest of the world!). I believe in words -Those who do not change perish first!
Fortunately I have the book in my personal library ...and unfortunately I haven't got time to hit even the first page yet ...LOL! Probably I bought too many at a time and burried it deepest... (wish I get sometime off from the zorpia and go back to my old habbits!)

Glad to know that you are perfect in your own sense, Paul. In fact their is no limit to being perfect. The tastiest of the food, the most beautiful woman, the most learned person may not be so for somebody else!

so then...one question remains: that stage of perfection should be treated as a limit? those who chose to live their life in perfection may end up in lying themselves thinking that they reached it or living in an unstoppable search...for the second possibility the only possible feeling i can understand is emptyness...

There is no limit ...Brandon, and there will never be. This is what I have come to realize after talking with some. Everybody is free to fix benchmark for her/himself depending upon the level of tolerance.

Nevertheless... the competence of others is again questionable ...and you should learn to raise or lower your limits accordingly ...before you lose your patience.
