Negative Spin......Spoiled....Take a LOOK

No matter how you feel about our current government officials, there is so much truth in this and it gives us much to be thankful for.
'The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true, given the source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed, and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the President. In essence, 2/3's of the citizenry just isn't happy and want a change.
So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, ''What are we so unhappy about?''
Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week? Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in
the winter?
Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?
Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time, and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?
Maybe it is the ability to drive from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state?
Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter?
I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough.
Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all, and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital.
Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained Firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames thus saving you, your family and your belongings.
Or if, while at home watching one of your many 42 inch flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss.
This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90 percent of teenagers own cell phones and computers.
How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?
Maybe that is what has 67 percent of you folks unhappy.
Could it be, The 67% are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. Perhaps that percentage is higher....
No wonder the world loves the U.S., yet has a great disdain for its citizens.
They see the 67% for what they are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what they don't have, and what we hate about the country instead of thanking God that they live here.
I know, I know. What about the President who took us into war and has no plan to get us out? The President who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same
President who guided the nation in the dark days after 9/11? The President that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been
called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all of us safe from terrorist attacks?
The Commander-In Chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me? Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad?
Think about it...are you upset at the President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the 'Media' told you he was failing.
Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go.
They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general'' discharge, an ''other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a ''dishonorable'' discharge after a few days in the brig.
So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 67 percent of Americans? Say what you want, but I blame it on the media and lack of thinking on 67% of Americans who truly believe all is real on TV News. If it bleeds, it leads; and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations. They offer what sells, and when criticized, try to defend their actions by 'justifying' them in one way or another.
Stop buying the negativism you are fed everyday by the media. Shut off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird cage.
Then start being grateful for all we have as a country. There is exponentially more good than bad.
We are among the most blessed people on Earth, and should thank God several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative.
With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, we can take heart that we have the ability to take care of our own and respond and that our Government allows this unlike third world countries who wont even let aide into their country though bodies lay strewn across the land and floating in rivers.
Who do you pledge allegience to? God, Country, Yourself, or the negative hacks who present the so called news.

While the media love to stir controversy and spin the results of surveys, the majority of discontent in the US is due to the cost in lives and treasure for a war we need never have waged, and the impact that has had on the world economy causing loss of jobs, home foreclosures and rising prices.People are not stupid, they clearly see the advantages of living in the US or Canada, but they still feel the right to complain and try to improve their condition. Most US citizens expect our country to be better than the rest of the world in providing social and health conditions, not third rate.Patriotism doesn't mean being unquestioning of the governance of the country, but wanting to contribute to it's improvement.

I hear what your saying however I dont fully agree. Many of the Foreclosures are a direct result of people being ignorant (getting in over thier heads) and banks not being banks (giving loans to people who normally wouldnt qualify). You mention our country being third rate...third as opposed to who. To be third would mean that there were two others that you think better with regards to social and health conditions? Who are they? I see no stop in people wanting to come into the US legally and illegally. Patriotism is defined as a person who loves or defends their country. No where in the definition is government or criticism brought up. That being said I believe it is possible to be a patriot and believe that things can be better. I stand on a quote by Roosevelt which is now titled as "the man in the arena" simply put it is the doer not the critiquer who counts. If one is contributing then I say they have a right to critique and question. if one is sitting back and waiting for someone to give them a handout then I say they need to keep their mouths shut. Finally, I hear your comments on the war and you are entitled to your opinions. I dont share your logic but I understand your grief and pain as I dont like losing young men and women in a occupation. Life is precious. Making decisions to put our men and women in harms way are tough. I personally dont like a lot of what Bush has or for that matter has not done as President. I can only say one thing for sure. I believe he is a man of conviction and passion and does love his country. He may not make good decisions in the eyes of some Americans as currently his approval rating is in the low 30's, but I do not believe he would of put our Military in if he didnt think it a just cause. I am not privy to the information used to make his decision (yes I know what the media reported and the politicians said). I don't believe Bush to be an evil man. It is possible he made a mistake but I am not President. I want our troops home as soon as possible too. This year we get to put another politician in power. You would think with the US being one of the most advanced and powerful nations in the world that we could do better than the three we have in the running.

Please don't spin my words, like some cheesy politician or sloppy journalist. I said our health statistics are in the same category as a third world nation.Infant mortality and access to health care are not at a level we are capable of rendering to our citizens.

Lew, I will say that I have no need to spin your words and your entitled to your opinion. If I incorrectly interpreted something you can feel free to correct me as I am looking for fair and honest discussions. PLease enlighten me as to where you get your statistics from. I can't find anything on the subject that you are referring to. You are saying that the United States has the same Health statistics as a third world country? I would like to know what country or country's you refer to and where I can see the statistics. That is all. You mention infant mortality. What are you saying that we compare to a third world country in this area? What level of health care are you looking for? Are you advancing the idea of socialistic government run Healthcare? I am just curious it is fine if you are. Its a forum. Oh, and I can assure you that I have the ability to be very cheesy...lol...take care Lew

I googled 'infant mortality' ranking and we stand 37th in the world. I do support the idea of a program of Government sponsored health care with a safety net for the poorest and least able to access health care and a member contribution based on the ability to pay.The current insurance based program has been a failure in providing for the most vulnerable. You can use buzz words like socialized, but I'm not sure what that means. Maybe something like government supporting areas of agribusiness or bailing out banks?

Hey thanks I will look it up. Lew there is no need to get "negative" with me ok. We are all in this and can learn from one another as I intend to do with the information you gave me. When I use a word like "socialized" it is because the word fits not because some "so-called" clever media person, or better yet a politician made it popular. "Socialized" as I refer to merely means as defined by Webster "To place under Government control" and to me nothing more nothing less. I think your two examples may more mirror "government doing things it was never intended to do" rather than socialization. Paying farmers not to grow crops is insane as is bailing out banks that decided to act irresponsibly. I am all about personal accountablity. If you gamble take the good with the bad. To sit and wait for the government or someone else to bail you out of any situation is at best a shame and at worst absolutely disgusting.

Hi Lew, I took a look at some of the figures and then started asking questions like WHY? How can this be? I dug a little deeper and came up with some other sites that bring to mind possible conclusions that logically could shed some lights on this one glaring disparity (listed below as a cut and paste).
This is a cut and paste.....from one of the sites I visited.
"The United States has more neonatologists and neonatal intensive care beds per person than Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom, but its newborn rate is higher than any of those countries," said the annual State of the World's Mothers report.
How can this be? We actually have superior facilities and apparently have a good number of doctors.
Could it be something is wrong with the way things are reported?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) definition, all babies showing any signs of life - such as muscle activity, a gasp for breath or a heartbeat - should be counted as a live birth. The U.S. strictly follows this definition. But many other countries do not...
http://www.ocregister.com/ocr/sections/commentary/orange_grove/article_443950.php
I intend to fully give myself some more time to study this but it speaks to the logic in me that if we have the medical centers and the doctors how is there such a disparity in numbers reporting. The only logical reason would be how numbers are being reported. I will of course continue digging as this is actually interesting thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Having served as a psychologist/social worker working in public health and mental health for most of my career, I suspect that the place where these facilities and services are concentrated will be where the best paying consumers live.Underserved communities tend to have a lower tax base for major construction of medical facilities, (a factor which
is of concern to the municipalities or regional governing bodies). Doctors tend to live in areas that best meet their economic priorities and recruitment for Medical staff in underserved areas requires some sort of subsidy to compete.

Oh there is no doubt that poor areas suffer and that doctors arent flocking to live in places like "Liberty City". Then again why should they. They have a right to live where they want and to earn a living. There are always going to be levels of society from the poor all the way up to the rich. Subsidys are necessary at times to get critical care givers into a area that is seen by them as perhaps undesirable. The haves and have nots. Its a vicious cycle. Just like Some believe it is a God given right for people to have children. While I believe that children are a blessing I do think that family planning is important. To have a child and not be able to support it puts a burden on society. Certainly there are legitimate cases where people need help and I for one dont ever want a child to go with out food or access to medical attention. They are children and defenseless and in need of care. I would support any measure that put children into the medical care that they need with a plan to help subsidize cost of care. On the other hand it seems socially irresponsible to have children with no way to pay for their care and to expect government and others to foot the bill. I had this discussion before and I got blasted by those saying how dare I suggest that poor people not be allowed children. I never said that as i grew up in a two child household with my mom and dad living off 22k a year. My response is the same as it was back then. If you cant afford them or care for them how is it fair that you expect me to. I care for my children and my family. I have at times had to work three jobs to do it and I did. Its just touchy because its an emotionally charged issue. By the way I commend you on your social work in the health industry thats a tough row but at times I am sure very rewarding.

I certainly agree with the idea of some way to address the population explosion. As you likely know it becomes a very thorny problem when trying to create a system to address the problem worldwide as well as here in the US with personal choice and religious factors all playing a part in the equation.

KS...you are doing it again!
I will rap up shortly (extremely) what you say.
We (you) are living in a place where we have electricity, the vast majority of people have a home and most even have a job...so shut up and stop complaining!
I think, the fact that some things are good in the U.S. shouldn't stop you and others from wanting to make them even better, right!?

Let's face it: your administration IS a shame to your once great nation and the current president is most of all.
I just hope that the 64% who think like that will be the 64% at the next presidential voting.
Actually: whoever gets to be the next president...he (or she) can not possibly give a worse picture that GWB.
And: there are a lot of things, that coud be done better in your country (in mine as well, by the way!).
That just needs some reconsidering: do you really need a starwars-like-missile-system in the Czech Republic that costs BILLIONS of dollars (from design over building and shipping it there)...or should you PROBABLY think about a renewed health care system?
You know my answer to that question...and I think, I unfortunately know yours!

I am doing it again..I love it. Hey Nils, look I really think that we should have good healthcare and I dont have a problem with implementation. What I have a problem with is track record. Our Government is broken. To actually believe that our Government can do a good job at anything especially in the Healthcare arena is a pipe dream. There is no track record of any program being efficient or well run. Look at our tax structure and the IRS. I dont need to go much further but it wouldnt be hard to point to the many programs that are failed and inefficient. I agree it can always be done better but I am sorry thinking my Government is going to do it better is just impossible for me to swallow. As for Star Wars I think you might be surprised of my thoughts. Its a joke. An albatrose if you will. We have more than enough Nuclear weapons to blow the world up three times over. Not to mention Star Wars wont stop a suitcase nuclear device delivered to say....the Port of New York. It is Not necessary and a trememndous waste of resources that could be put into well lets see
1. Energy research (Notice I didnt say Global warming)
2. Tax reform (administrative costs)
3. Childrens Healthcare
4. Insurance reforms (administrative costs)
5. Education and reforms
6. As Lew Mentioned Hospital Subsidys in poverty stricken areas that would attract doctors and healthcare workers.
7. Subsidy the car Industry to build more efficient engines.
I mention subsidy, as I think the private sector is much better suited to running efficient programs than the Government. AS for your references to GWB I can only say he is gone this year and a new one steps in...judging by the three candidates it is apparent that my thoughts on Government and its quality will continue.
