I'm My Own Grandpa - Funny Old Song

I'm My Own Grandpa

Now many many years ago when I was 23
I was married to a widow who was pretty as can be
This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red
My father fell in love with her and soon they too were wed

This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life
My daughter was my mother 'cause she was my father's wife
To complicate the matter even though it brought me joy
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy

My little baby then became a brother-in-law to Dad
And so became my uncle, though it made me very sad
For if he was my uncle, then that also made him brother
Of the widow's grown-up daughter who was also my stepmother

Father's wife then had a son who kept them on the run
And he became my grandchild, for he was my daughter's son
My wife is now my mother's mother and it makes me blue
Because altho' she is my wife, she's my grandmother too

Now if my wife is my grandmother, then I'm her grandchild
And every time I think of it, it nearly drives me wild
For now I have become the strangest case I ever saw
As husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa

Is that New Brunswick? I don't know much about New Brunswick except that we always drove through it on our way to PEI. That was in the days when there was no bridge so we took the Abeguit across.

Fond memories of those 6 summers in the 1950's spent on PEI. I got to see the arrival of paved roads in the Annandale area, and the first phone and electricity. One of the town men was extremely talented mechanically. He built and used the first power lawn mower and the first TV in Annandale. He was also the boat ferry captain between Annandale and the town across the bay.

I remember my grandma, who was an Islander, telling me that I shouldn't say anything bad about anyone -- because almost everyone was related to me (LOL).

I see you spent time recently in Cavendish. I loved visiting there and also reading the Green Gables books. We also had relatives in Summerside, so we usually visited the area each summer.

Take care -- Steve

Hi Steven

I had forgotten that you had PEI connections. I apolozige.

I also loved the "Anne" books. They are among my most treasured books.

When was the last time you visited the island?

Last time was summer of 1957.......hard to believe that long ago. Memories are still very fresh in my mind. My parents continued to go there summers until the mid 1990's. Then they sold the house we owned in Annandale (now known as the blue house).

Since you like photography -- sometime take a look at this website on PEI. Fantastic pictures and comments always. It's by a man and his daughter from Souris in Eastern Kings County PEI.

Thanks for your note Dawn.

Thank you for the link Stephen. The photos are wonderful!

1957 seems like a life time ago to me. I was one back then! :)

If you have an opportunity, you should come up and go to the Island. I'm sure there are many changes since you last visited, but it's still very peaceful and a beautiful place to visit. The summers can be quite busy but there is usually some nice weather in the Spring and Fall when it is quieter, if you want to avoid the "hustle and bustle" of the high summer season.
